We offer American Sailing Association (ASA) certifications for 101, 103, 104, and docking. ASA also offers advanced courses in navigation including catamarans. 


ASA certifications are recognized world wide. Upon successful completion of these classes you will be qualified to captain your own vessel or charter one of ours in the Sailing Miami fleet.


These classes will take you from beginning to advanced skill levels.

Sailing Miami ASA Training Program

ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing


This is a 2 day course covering the basics of keelboat handling with an emphasis on safety.

Course content:

Getting Underway, Boat Balance, Docking, Securing Boat, Points of Sail, Tacking & Jibing, Sail Trim, Controlling Angle of Heel, Heaving to, Reefing, Crew Overboard Drill, and Written Exam. Includes ASA certification for each participant.

Price: $ 700/student, $ 1,200/couple

Prerequisite: None


ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising

This is a 2 day course. Students will learn the fundamentals of large boat cruising in preparation for skippering on larger bodies of water.

Course Content:

More hands on experience with Course 101 content. Additional content includes the areas of Boat Systems & Battery, Electrical Panel, Prop Walk & Docking, Rules of the Road, Sound Signals, Buoys, Lights, VHF, Cruising Tips, Navigation, Chart Problem, Safety Systems, Heavy Weather Sailing, Written Exam. Includes ASA 103 certification for each participant.

Price: $ 800/student, $ 1,500/couple

Prerequisite: Basic Keelboat ASA 101 (Qualified sailors may test out of ASA 101)


ASA 104 Bareboat Chartering

This is a two-day, one-night live aboard course, boarding the first day at 10:00 am staying on the boat one night and going to 5:00 p.m. on the second day.

Course  Content:

The course is structured along the lines of an actual charter. It leverages everything learned in Course 101 and 103. Additional content includes the areas of Provisioning, Meal preparation, Working with charter companies, Boat Systems, Emergency Procedures, Safety, Anchoring, Navigation, Electronic and Manual chart work, Cruising Tips, Written Exam. Includes ASA 104 certification for each participant.

Price: $ 900/student, $ 1,700/couple

Prerequisite: Basic Cruising ASA 103 and Basic Keelboat ASA 101



ASA 101/103 or ASA 103/104 Cruise N' Learn Vacation


One or more levels of ASA instruction can be combined into one week-long course, cruising to the Florida Keys, Miami to Key Largo and back. This is a 5 day course starts at 3 pm; with the first night spent at the dock getting acquainted with the boat. The following day you depart for the Florida Keys; with alternating anchoring out and optional marina stops for fun going ashore. Your instructor will call you to go over what to bring and to answer any other questions you may have.

ASA 101/103 Price: $ 1,450/student, $ 2,700/couple

ASA 103/104 Price: $ 1,700/student, $ 3,000/couple

                    - Transient dockage fees, if any, are shared by the students.


ASA 118 Docking Endorsement

This 1 day course is designed to teach docking skills. It covers the basic theory and hands on techniques needed to dock and undock boats in an efficient manner and without damage and injury.

Course Content:

After reviewing study materials prior, students will spend an entire day on the boat practicing what they learned. Topics to be covered include forces that act on the boat, engine and rudder control, properly securing mooring lines, spring lines, safety, and crew responsibilities. Includes ASA 118 certification for each student.

ASA Introductory Fee

​NEW ASA (American Sailing Association) students shall pay a one time $ 39 certification fee to set the student up in the ASA Certification Database. This nominal fee includes membership in the American Sailing Association. This fee does not apply to students who have taken ASA classes previously.
